When Chicago custom home builder and designer Steven Lecas, owner of Gander Builders, chose the historic district of Frankfort, Illinois for the location of his custom home, he knew he wanted to design a home that would blend in with the older houses in the area. Steve and his wife, Susan, chose a 2,850 square foot two-story style home with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Although the ranch home was originally painted yellow, Susan soon realized that many other houses in the area were also being painting painted yellow. Susan knew that a home as unique as hers needed a color of its own. She chose a lovely Coastal Blue that makes the house shine.
The first floor features a main level study with an adjacent bathroom. The study could easily be turned into a first floor master bedroom. The great room, which is connected to the kitchen, boasts a vaulted ceiling framed by exposed beams, floor to ceiling built-in cabinets structured around an oversized stone fireplace, and enough space for a growing family. The large windows and skylights add to the generous feel of the room.
Steve and Susan, have spent years upgrading and improving the home. The most recent improvement is the study. It now presents as an old world-style hunting parlor. The wooden floors are eight inch wide character grade white oak that required extra attention. The wood floor was a labor of love, but the end result is stunning. The home also features outstanding wood detailing around all the windows, doors, and interior arches of the home.
In many homes, the kitchen is the central hub of family life and the Lecas’ kitchen is no exception. The kitchen’s two ovens, generous counter space, and extra large walk-in pantry make this an ideal space for anyone who loves to cook or entertain. The huge peninsula island and work station seats six and overlooks the great room.
In the mudroom, a custom locker for each family member is a boon to any busy family on the move. Easy organization means less stress and rushing in the morning. Upstairs, the master bathroom is a study in luxury. The exquisite claw foot bathtub and oversized walk-in shower are standouts, but the two extra large vanities make excellent use of the room as well as offer hidden storage. The second upstairs bathroom is situated between the children’s bedrooms. The Jack-and-Jill bathroom also features a double vanity.
This country style home’s exterior is wrapped with three spacious covered porches. The rear porch leading to a lower deck is a popular spot during neighborhood gatherings. The lower deck is made from low maintenance composite material and requires only a seasonal power wash to keep it looking new. Inside the double garage, radiant heat is utilized. Radiant heat is surprisingly effective at keeping freezing temperatures at bay. A welcome feature during those below zero mornings!
